Gifts of memory and experience

We all have one - that person in our lives that is the bane of the holiday gift. One who has everything. Unable to shop for, they serve to receive some schlock you snagged at the last minute when something better failed to come. They are always polished on this subject, but really - why buy a sweater when they already have a closet full of designer clothes? What can you bring to complete a house full and carefully organized antiques collection from anywhere in the world?

To save you the embarrassment of (yet) to give them something to return (or hide), or worse - a book by "coupon" free hugs, we compiled a list of the things that even these folks probably didn't. And if they do, they will be always glad to have another.

A star

If this person has everyone, but they've got something out of this world? Like a star? Non? Thought not. You can give them one, in several different ways.

You can have a star named after them, and the register star will send a certificate with details of their very own star namesake. Ideal for the narcissistic and fun for the rest of us. Pale blue dot project allows you to 'adopt' a star, and the profits will go towards funding research on this particular star - an ideal gift for the scientific spirit and the Sci-Fi geeks. Planetariums across the country allow you to adopt a star in the Planetarium and the proceeds go to support the planetarium - it is perfect for those who are interested in the participation of the community, and it's pretty cool they can "visit" their star.

An endangered species

Your gift recipient friend perhaps have all gadgets known to man, but has a tiger/elephant/polar bear? Do not believe.

Conservation groups have programs that allow you to adopt a member of an endangered species, with profits in the direction of the conservation of this species. Of course, they don't name it after the person, but most of them send a spongy stuffed animal representation of the selected species and a nice certificate. The World Wildlife Fund, Discovery.com, Defenders of Wildlife wild Hawaii all offer this type of program, and discover local conservation for an even more personal touch groups. At the end of the day, your friend gets to sit and embrace a Gila Monster plush and reflect on how it has helped because of him.

Experience

If you are close to all the difficult recipient, you know music from his bucket list. He always wanted to do that he has never had time to things. If you could do one of these things arrive, your name would go on the "legend of gifts" list forever. Experience carries a material gift whenever it creates memories (and also boast,) If you choose wisely. Swim with the dolphins, skydiving, scuba diving, car racing at the wheel, caresses of Tiger - all these experiences can be purchased, and all are elements of common bucket list. For the less adventurous, looking for things like tastings, painting classes, cruises and day spa packages. GroupOn and social life are perfect for these sorts of gifts, especially if you're on a budget.

A caveat here - are you going or not? If it's something you always talked about doing together, it's good for you to go along. But remember you give a gift here, and automatically insert you in the scenario is like saying, "here I have you something! And I got something, too! ". But do not buy a ticket and require the recipient to pay money to bring a companion, or - get a gift should not be expensive. Either buy two tickets for the recipient can choose a date (perhaps even you), or provide support as an observer (unless requested otherwise).

Don

If you really can't think anything at all this person did or did not, make a donation in their name. Choose a charitable organization that supports a cause favorite of their (not yours), write a check and send them the map. If the beneficiary gets checked on their gift to someone less fortunate, he serves them just to already have everything. If the recipient is human and has a soul, she will be touched by the gesture, and warm fuzzies ensue.

How can you not know your in-laws

When can we arrive above?

Recently, I had the opportunity to entertain my in-laws to my house. My partner and I usually visit them at their home, but my mother-in-law was practically begging for an invitation for weeks. Whenever we saw that she would ask, 'when are you going to invite us to your place?"or"we would really like to see your location, when us come?" She went so far as to write this nagging question in a thank you letter after Christmas! Finally, I gave in and we invited them to dinner at our place.

Entertain the in-laws

One could say that the first thing I did wrong was to invite over all, but at the moment where I felt that it really could not be avoided. If I did step entertain the in-laws, they just keep asking until he became clumsy little by little, and then I would have a situation on my hands that I really didn't. And now, I'm glad, it's over with, but throughout the night will go down in history as one of the evenings more irritating that I hosted. Of course, any good host or hostess knows that if a party is not fun, it's his fault, because she or he was responsible for the list guests a good time. I feel this way in this case, too, but believe me, they are not the easiest in the world people, please.

Sticky mother-in-law

My mother-in-law, in particular, is known to be extremely critical. Even if she is a woman of pedestrian tastes, she thinks that she is at the height of the fashion, so anyone who does not share his taste for the mundane and the sticky, it takes for an inhabitant of underdeveloped cave. Worse still, it is the Backwaters of a State in the Midwest, so she knows (or thinks she knows) that anyone who disagrees with it is all simply misinformed, and adopts a very paternalistic tone when it gives people instructions on how to dress, to live and behave. In other words, invited on was a lot of pressure, and I wanted to serve something truly delicious.

Dinner

My father-in-law is a gluten-free diet, and I am a vegetarian, so my cooking options were limited. In the end, I settled on a recipe that I made once, several years ago, and which has been a great success. It is a recipe for scalloped potatoes and fennel, and I thought it would go over really well. I followed the recipe faithfully, but for some reason any he just did turn out very well. It was a little bland. For worse, Olive Tapenade I made for the occasion was too strong, because of the fact that I had never done before. Suffice it to say that I have had much better results if, instead of trying to impress, I went with something that I knew would turn well.

After dinner

The part after the evening dinner is not much better. The in-laws do not seem to love the music that I chose, my mother - and father - in - law took turns to monopolize the conversation, and at the end of the night we were all struggling to stay awake in each other's company. I should have prepared some topics of conversation or activities in advance (not that fun-loving my in-laws), or at least instructed a friend to simulate an emergency at an opportune moment.

The greatest lesson I've learned from all this is never, under any circumstances, to invite my in-laws to dinner. If I had to do it again, however, I'll try to be a little better prepared. I hope someone can learn from my mistakes.

Autumn meditations: A seasonal Moment of clarity

The fall brings changes in time and routine. Traditionally, this period of the year has been devoted in the final harvest and get ready for winter - for most of us, however, these rules no longer apply. For food, we have the grocery store. For the winter, we have central heating and parkas. But autumn still has lessons to teach us, if we cannot be calm enough to listen.

Changes

Change is featured obvious fall. Time goes from hot to cool to cold. Food seasonal ranges from light and fresh heavy and starchy. Routines change in vacation and swimming at school and homework. Even your surroundings change as the leaves turn beautiful colors and gradually drop branches.

Think about what change means to your life. You are in the middle of change? Are there changes you want to make? You live as a result of a change for the worse? Think examine your resilience and your sense of adventure. Change is difficult, because it requires you to venture into the unknown. But it's also exciting because wonderful things can wait on the other side - you'll never know until you make the leap.

Preparation for winter

Any changes in the fall have to do with winding down. The days get shorter and the fauna is settling and preparing for hibernation. You can be less active as the temperature drops and falls by the light of the day. It is the season of preparation - early autumn is a period of frenetic activity, during which animals (and Paleolithic man!) furiously collect and preserve food, storing it away for the winter - but this period does not last very long. Once all the food available is gathered, there are few things to do to prepare the House for the coming cold.

Meditate on the Act of progressive reduction of activities. The year comes to an end - is there anything you want her? Think about ways to get there. Maybe you need to relax - meditation is what the doctor ordered. Think about how your life settled towards the end of the day and extend that to think of all the "seasons" of your life.

Family get togethers

Family is always important, but we tend to see more of them in the fall. Children tend to stay closer to us they did during the summer, and even MOM and dad have a tendency to to indoor activities more. The holiday also approximation we together, bringing together several generations under one roof. As the weather grows progressively more cold, we tend to gather around the fireplace, all.

Think deeply in your family and their relationships with others and yourself. Fully explore the sensations of heat, that feel you when you think about your children. If you feel anxious, explore that, too. Meditate on your deep and intense love for your spouse, your gratitude towards your parents, your friendship with your brothers and sisters and even your love for your pets. Family unity should be a tighter link and the warmest feeling you know - feel these feelings and revel in their. If not, find out why. Is there a way to do better?

Moments fall

As the air grows colder, your environment changes radically. Trees shed their mop tops to be graceful, slender wood sculptures exhibited against the sky. Colored leaves are a bejeweled carpet under your feet. The crisp air feels refreshing in your lungs. In some climates, ponds and small streams can even begin to freeze.

Try an outdoor nature meditation. Dress for the weather and sit somewhere quiet. Listen to the fall of the leaves. Watch as the squirrels gather nuts last season. Try to hear the sound of the coming winter. Fill your lungs will be cool, clean air and feel the blush on your cheeks. Later, sit outside and drink a nice cup of tea, giving particular attention to the way in which the steam loops Cup. Think what whatsoever, just look, listen and feel. Be in tune with the fall.

How to Become a Self-starter

"Welcome evermore to gods and men is the self-helping man. For him all doors are flung wide: him all tongues greet, all honors crown, all eyes follow with desire. Our love goes out to him and embraces him, because he did not need it. We solicitously and apologetically caress and celebrate him, because he held on his way and scorned our disapprobation. The gods loved him because men hated him." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
You heard it right, they are a class apart. They aren't afraid of falling, nor of walking against the tide. They are the ones who make the most of the opportunities that come their way. And it is often noticed that they are the ones subjected to envious stares and tirades. These are the people driven by an insatiable hunger to be on the top rung of the ladder, and most often you will find them there, smiling away to glory. No one said success comes easy, and for these people, it definitely isn't a bed of roses. Look at it from their point of view, it is relatively easier to practice than to preach.

It is human tendency to hate being a mere puppet and if you are among those who like to have your way, then it's time you took charge of your life. You and I can be a part of this mini-universe, all we got to do is to give it our all in all. Enough said about the enterprisers, let's just get down to the details that keeps them above the rest.

Take One Small Step at a Time...• B +
• Persevere
• Brave the Storm
• Seize the Opportunity
• Channelize Your Energies
• Create Your Own Opportunities
• Change Your Attitude Towards Life
• Remember, Procrastination is Your Foe
• Set Realistic Goals and Strive to Achieve It
• Take Responsibility to Make it Big in Your Life
• Success Comes From Taking Small Steps at a Time "Life opens up opportunities to you, and you either take them or you stay afraid of taking them." - Jim Carrey
Taking the First Step: Are you still waiting for things to happen? For opportunities to come your way, for your life to change?
The truth is that change will take place, the very moment you decide to actually take the reins of your life into your own hands. As I said small steps matter, your first step to success has got to be baby steps, nothing huge and nothing drastic. Treat the assignment laid out before you as a puzzle, where you try to solve it one piece at a time.

Take Responsibility of Your Actions: It is high time you started taking responsibility seriously. By responsibility, I imply, you should be aware of what your actions and their consequent reactions will be. Being responsible also means you stop blaming others for the situation you land yourself in. When you are in charge of the things that affect you, at some point of time those little things stop affecting you. Something to get you by,

"With independence comes great responsibility."
Monitor Your Goals: Now that you have decided to give the hands-on approach to life a go, be sure to surge ahead with full confidence. Set realistic goals, ones you know you will be able to achieve. Follow your heart, that's one way you know you will never be wrong. Once you set your goal right, get to achieving it and monitor your progress. Once you hone this skill, there won't be anything that will stop you from being in the top rung of life.

Time is Money: Do not leave anything unto tomorrow that can be done today. There is no point wasting time waiting for the right moment to come, if you want to be successful you have to make do with living entirely in the present. Go-getters seize the task on hand and strive to complete it the very same day rather than keeping it for later. Ain't it good to be done with something than have it eating into your time and energy and consequently your peace of mind for a long period of time?

Change is Good: Believe me, a lot depends on your attitude towards life. Imagine, if first impressions can make or mar you, what can your own attitude towards life do? A laid-back approach towards life is a big no-no, and on the contrary you got to have a go-get it attitude. Try to be always on the move, always on the prowl for new opportunities to shine. And shine is what you will do if you make the most of the opportunities coming your way.

"A pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist is one who makes opportunities of his difficulties." - Harry S. Truman
Create Opportunities: The plus point of taking control of your life is you can create pathways where earlier there was no road. Be your own boss, make it possible to do the impossible. According to me, I guess their driving quote must be resounding Muhammad Ali's quip, "Impossible is Nothing".

Giving it Your All in All: It is important that you channelize your energy in the right direction. It takes passion to do something right and that's what you need to do. Have a child-like enthusiasm when you get down to actually execute your tasks. Don't let that enthusiasm die till the task at hand is all but completed.

Don't Let Fear Hold You Back: Fear of failing should not be in your dictionary. It can be simply 'alt+ctrl+ deleted' from your life. You need to live a life sans regret, for every opportunity will bring with it a learning experience. Make the most of everything that comes your way.

"To hell with circumstances; I create opportunities." - Bruce Lee
The Show Must Go On: That says it, you got to work and work till you succeed. Nothing comes easy, not even for the enterprising lot. You got to make it through with your own hard work and perseverance. Strive to be the best and remember to never ever give up. Keep your faith soaring on gas balloons at all times, that will keep you high above if nothing else.

Finally, Be POSITIVE: There is nothing like making a note of the good things in life. There is always a silver lining behind a dark cloud, all you got to do is to train your eyes to see the good that lies ahead.

To end, I'd like to agree with Michael Jackson who croons, "I'm gonna make a change, for once in my life. It's gonna feel real good, gonna make a difference gonna make it right . . I'm starting with the man in the mirror. I'm asking him to change his ways and no message could have been any clearer if you wanna make the world a better place".

Maine, Maryland First to Approve Same-Sex Marriage by Popular Vote

The 0 for 32 streak is finally over! After failing in the first 32 attempts to have same-sex marriages supported by popular vote, gay rights advocates can officially claim their first victories. Voters in Maine and Maryland approved measures that would affirm the legality of same-sex unions in their states. The issues were brought to popular votes after opponents of same-sex unions forced recently approved legislation to be voted on by the public.

Washington state is also expected to legalize same-sex unions, but the state won't have official election results for another day or two. In another victory for gay rights, Minnesota voted down an amendment that would have defined marriage in that state as possible only between a man and a woman.

This is big news as cases move toward the Supreme Court that may end up creating a precedent on which national legislation will be based. The evangelical Christian right and other religious groups remain staunchly opposed to same-sex marriage, as they view homosexuality as sinful and against the will of God.

Same-sex marriage advocates have argued that people should be afforded equal rights under the law, regardless of their sexual preferences. The many gay couples who have children have argued that their home environment will improve as their children come to understand their parents as a legally married couple. The LGBT community and advocacy groups are pointing to the victories in Maine and Maryland as a turning point in the quest for marriage equality.

History of the hair dry

When it comes to history, it is the big things that come to mind. Wars, politics, exploration and invention are all a considerable part of our history as a species, but we are too often the little things acquired, forgetting that they, too, have interesting stories behind them.

Take the hair dryer, for example. It is very likely that you have one in your home, and a significant portion of the population uses one every day. You can buy one in any store of drugs for only a few dollars - it is easy to forget what a convenience, they are. Think about it - the ability to dry your hair in minutes, right in the Palm of your hand, complete with different accessories to change the air flow. The typical hair dryer offers adjustable heat, adjustable speed and is light enough to be used by a child. It was not always so easy.

For most of human history, people simply dry their hair in the open air. We still do today on occasion, so you know that a thick hair can stay wet for hours. Not a big problem at the beach in July, but imagine having to endure that in January with nothing more than a fire for warmth. Of course, hair was not washed as often at the time, but it's still moist - rain has been a part of human experience from the beginning. The most advanced hair drying option at the time was an absorbent cloth and a seat near the fire.

Would ultimately caused the discovery of electricity and the spread of household appliances somewhat of a solution - at the beginning of the 20th century, inventive women attach hoses to the side "blower" vacuuming and the use of blow dry their hair. It helped, but only a little, and the air was cold and difficult to manage.

First drying hair devices invented by Alexandre Godefroy in 1890, and it was closest dryers show that handheld devices now used at home. A fabric CAP has been placed on the woman's head and attached to a flue pipe. The pipe has been set at a stove equipped with a hand fan powered by crank, that would direct the air in the tube of fabric to dry the hair under the hood.

The advantage is that the airflow was not strong enough to move the hair, which meant that hair may be wet and dry mortar in rolls. The downside is that air came directly from a gas stove, it was quite warm, and the temperature could not be controlled. Unlike modern dryers, which use the air force to physically blow the droplets of water on the hair strands and the heat from the air to the evaporation of the water's speed, this dryer has relied on only thermal evaporation. This process took time, and often the woman would sweat under the hood, Rewetting the hair as it dried. It was not the most efficient solution.

The 1920s saw the first dryer as we recognize it today. It is electric pocket and shaped more or less like our modern versions. It was convenient, accessible and much faster than the vacuum or the flue pipe. This was not super-fast however - it is only about 100 watts, compared with dryers of 2000 watts of today. He was also more than twice as heavy current models, weighing in at a two heavy books - metal and wood, he did not exactly made a walk in the Park of drying of hair. It could also be dangerous - the engine was located outdoors, so hair could get tangled in it, and the threat of electrocution was real.

The engine has found its way inside the unit in the 1950s, which allows the dryer run more quiet and a little safer. The design was simplified and lightened slightly, making it easier to take over longer periods of time.

Hair dryer, we know today that really occurred in the 1960s. The technology has improved to the point where the casings may be made of plastic, lighten the load even more, and small engines were become effective enough to produce about 500 watts. This makes drying easier and faster than ever.

Over the years, the improved engine efficiency, insulating materials lighter and new heating elements have been developed, which brings the hair drying experience we know today. Our modern models produce about 2000 watts, use an instant-heating ceramic element, include "cool shot" buttons instant cold air, include 'Ionic technology' modes that increase the shine and have a differential switch which cut dry hair electric shock up to about four per year.

The next time you're frustrated that it takes a set of 10 minutes to dry your hair, consider how lucky you are to live in a time where a seemingly simple process is no heavier significant discomfort or real physical danger.

Playtime for Grownups

When was the last time you played? Not the last time you humored the kids while they smashed block castles, but actually dove into the activity and ran at the blocks yourself? If you’re like most adults, it’s probably been way too long. What are you waiting for? Is it because it seems childish? What’s wrong with being childish every once in a while? Where is it written that grownups have to be serious and sophisticated all the time?

Even wild animals play - birds get drunk on rotten berries, polar bears slide down frozen hills, dolphins leap for the simple joy of it. Playtime is how biological beings unwind, relax, and remember what it means to be alive - hint: it has nothing to do with money, bills or material things.

Play can be anything that makes you happy - in fact, if it’s not fun, it’s not play. You might enjoy playing tag, or you might prefer video games. Maybe Sudoku is your thing, or maybe you’ve never met a tree you didn't want to climb. It doesn't matter what it is. Make an effort to play for at least a little while every day and you will absolutely see your quality of life improve.

It’s Social - But It Doesn't Have To Be

Having a strong social circle has been repeatedly linked to longer life, better health and increased happiness. Instead of sitting in a bar drinking with your friends, why not organize a snowball fight? Or an epic game of Capture the Flag? Or Hide and Seek? Or maybe an Angry Birds showdown? Any one of these things will cause more laughter, more exuberance and more bonding than sitting in the same dive, listening to the same music while presiding over the same drinks that you’ve done every weekend for years.

If you’re not the social type, don’t feel pressured to play with others. It’s perfectly fine to play alone. Try hiking a new trail or exploring a new part of town. Take your dog to the park and just be silly. Do whatever feels right, and who cares if people are looking? If it stresses you out, it’s not the right play for you.

Divorce Yourself From The Outcome

Grownups get into the habit of basing experiences on the outcome - "I’m not gonna do all that just for that!" - sound familiar? The point of play is the experience of doing it - not who wins or loses, not who’s the better player, not whether you might become an expert someday, and definitely not whether or not you could possibly make a career out of it. It’s about losing yourself in the action - diving in head first, not being necessarily good at it, and doing it anyway because it’s just so darn fun. It’s freeing, and it reminds you that you are so much more than a sum of your talents and abilities.

It Increases Your Activity Level - Or Not

Play, by default, can increase your daily activity levels without feeling like work or exercise. Even if you regularly work out, a rowdy game of "chase" with your toddler still counts toward your calorie burn. Even days where you don’t feel like going to the gym, you might still be up for a romp in the dog park or a game of pickup basketball. Just because it’s not an organized "workout" doesn't mean it’s not good for your body. Get your muscles moving, your blood pumping, your joints lubricated and flexible, and you’ll feel young forever.

You Become The Master of Your Own Joy

We all experience joy in our lives, but too often it’s dependent upon others. You felt joy at your daughter’s wedding, then at your grandson’s birth. You felt joy when you won that award or got that coveted promotion. You felt joy when you came into money. While all of these things are great, not one of them is 100% under your control.

With play, all you have to do is make the decision to go play, make the commitment to give yourself over to it entirely, and the joy will come. You can grab a joy infusion anytime you want, and it doesn't matter if your daughter’s even dating, or who else is in the running for the award, or whether there are jobs available in upper management, or whether great-aunt Lucy is still alive and kickin’.

In the end, you are the boss of your brain. You are the one who decides to be stressed or calm, happy or sad, free or constrained. By incorporating more play into your life, you incorporate better good things of many varieties, and that can never be bad.
